Arunachal Pradesh is the largest state in the North Eastern region of India and does not have any functional airport at the moment. Itanagar being the capital of the state needs to be well connected to the rest of the country and the world to promote tourism in Arunachal Pradesh.

Due to its unrivalled aesthetics and a diverse cultural heritage, the state possesses a great tourism potential. The master planning of the airport is proposed to be at Holongi site in Itanagar due to its flat terrain.
