Maldives, in full Republic of Maldives, also called Maldives' Islands, independent island country in the north-central Indian Ocean. It consists of a chain of about 1,200 small coral islands and sandbanks (some 200 of which are inhabited), grouped in clusters, or atolls. The islands extend more than 510 miles (820 km) from north to south and 80 miles (130 km) from east to west. The northernmost atoll is about 370 miles (600 km) south-southwest of the Indian mainland, and the central area, including the capital island of Male (Male'), is about 400 miles (645 km) southwest of Sri Lanka. The existing GAN airport is located in Addu Island and 13 Km from Hithadhoo.

Creative group LLP has undertaken the process of the redevelopment and extension of the existing airport. The design is inspired from the local culture and tradition of Maldives. It also takes reference from the marine life. The form is inspired from the waves of the ocean. The intent was to create a space that is born out of the site and is embodied in nature. The integrated terminal is an elegant modern structure defined by a High-Tech Aerodynamic Building offering a smooth transition to its passengers from the flight to the city. The building has been carefully planned and various active and passive green measures have been implemented making use of the best available resources. Retention of storm water and rain water harvesting recharges ground water, to ensure judicious and energy efficient functioning of the terminal.
